Why was the Hawaii volcanoes national park selected as a world heritage site?

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. This natural site is inscribed under criteria viii. It contains Mauna Loa and Kilauea which are two of the most active volcanoes in the world. Geological processes are also easily observed at the site.
