A surgeon usually works in only 1-3 hospitals within a geographical area. Most surgeons have to apply for privileges with the hospital in order to perform surgery using their facilities. The surgeon is subject to discipline by the hospital through the Chief of Surgery, and the hospital can revoke privileges if they think the surgeon is causing problems or is incompetent.
