With their claws and their heads, Goliath beetles [Goliathus spp] defend themselves. All six of the female's and male's jointed legs end in sharp claws. Additionally, the male's head ends in a Y-shaped horn that's used against other male Goliath beetles and against predators. The female's head is wedge shaped, and tends to be used for burrowing through soil. But it also may be an intimidating battering ram in disputes and against enemies.
