How was the Reconstruction a missed opportunity?

Reconstruction is often seen as a missed opportunity because it failed to fully integrate formerly enslaved people into American society with equal rights and protections. Despite the initial advancements, such as the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, systemic racism and violent opposition led to the establishment of Jim Crow laws, which perpetuated racial discrimination and disenfranchisement. Additionally, the lack of sustained federal commitment and support allowed Southern states to undermine Reconstruction efforts, ultimately leading to a legacy of inequality that persisted for generations.
