I guess you are more interested in median actually, i.e. not the average size, but the size of an average car (robust to outliers). The world median engine volume is 1.8 l (data for 2008 only unfortunatelly). However, this differs a lot between countries. While in Japan and India one third of cars are under 1000 ccm and the median is about 1.4 l, in Europe there's much less super-small cars, so the median is about 1.6 l, similarly in China, SAR, or Latin America. On the side of large engines is Australia with 2.4 l and finally, notoriously known for fuel wasting, the USA with incredible 3.2 l.
