"The Door" by Robert Coover is not a book, but a short story. Coover tells the story of Little Red Ridinghood in three frames, using three different Fairy Tales to create a new one. 1. Jack and the Beanstalk - Jack has become the giant, the ogre; in fairy tales and folklore, a man-eating monster or giant; also: a hideous, coarse or cruel man. Here, Jack is RRH's cowardly father, who neglected to warn her about the world's evils. 3rd person narrator. 2. Jack's old mother is Beauty, from Beauty and the Beast, only her Beast neve became a prince. She's the Wordly one and tells RRH what to expect. 1st person narrator. 3. Little Red Ridinghood approaches granny's cottage, the door is open, and she KNOWS that once she enters, she will not be able to return - return to her childhood, since behind the door wait puberty and adulthood. 3rd person narrator. "The Door" is also the entrance, the opening story to the collections of experimental stories in Pricksongs & Descants. Hope this helps, Ly Bell
