The Ford Mustang was first available for purchase at dealerships on April 17, 1964. The 'official' first Mustang had the VIN of 5F07F100001, and was intended to be a promo car that would make the tour circuit to show off Ford's new car line. It was sold by an overly zealous salesman to an airline pilot by the name of Stanley Tucker. Ford later bought the car back from Capt. Tucker and it now resides in a museum in Dearborn, MI.

The first year of production was in 1964, these cars are referred to as "1964.5's" because production didn't start until late '64. The original idea for the Mustang was presented to Ford Motor Co. in 1961, however.
