Why does Shylock pretend to be absentminded?

Shylock pretends to be absentminded during the trial scene in "The Merchant of Venice" in order to mislead the court and gain sympathy for his case. By feigning confusion and pretending to not remember the terms of the bond, he hopes to elicit pity from the Duke and other characters present.
