Caterpillars are the larval stage in the life cycle of a moth or butterfly (the second stage out of four). Although a caterpillar may shed its skin several times, it is still in the larval stage, not a baby or adult caterpillar.

They generally eat leaves, though the type of plant each caterpillar prefers varies by species. For example, the 'parsley worm' caterpillar of the black swallowtail butterfly eats the leaves of parsley family (parsley, celery, dill, carrots, parsnips, or Queen Anne's Lace, aka wild carrot.) Some caterpillars eat fruit, though I could not find an example tonight.
