There probably isn't one single best medication because anxiety has multiple causes.
People often prescribe benzodiazepines, including Xanax, Ativan, and Klonopin for treating generalized anxiety disorder. Sometimes people also prescribe antidepressants, including SSRI's, as anxiety and depression are closely related.
However, the benzodiazepines and other medications that directly treat anxiety, show no evidence of helping in the long-term, and may even cause harm. They do not address the root causes of anxiety, and they can become addictive, and cause a greater rebound of anxiety symptoms when the user comes off the drug. They are only effective and suitable for very short-term use.
There are a number of herbal medicines to treat anxiety. Most of these medicines are not as potent or strong as the prescription drugs on the market, but they are safer and have fewer side-effects. They range from relatively safe herbs like chamomile and lemon balm, which can be consumed as beverages, to more potent ones like passionflower, which are usually only used for medicinal use. These herbs have not been studied as thoroughly as prescription drugs. However, they are not subject to the same allegations of corruption due to the profit motive that can potentially cloud pharmaceutical research and lead to publication bias and other problems.
