To set the timing on a 1978 Ironhead Sportster with points and condenser, first, remove the timing cover to access the points. Rotate the engine to the "F" mark on the timing mark window to align the timing mark with the pointer. Use a feeler gauge to adjust the points gap to 0.018 inches at the highest point of the cam lobe. Finally, loosen the points plate and rotate it until the points just begin to open, then tighten the screws to secure the plate in place. Reassemble the timing cover and check the ignition system.
