What happens in chapter 16 in woods runner?

Chapter 16, the travelers reach the shore of the Hudson River in New Jersey, across from New York City. The muddy bank of the river is crowded with men and boats, and Abner takes them to a friend named Matthew who will take Samuel and Abner across to the city. Annie is made to stay behind with Matthew's men, although she makes Samuel promise to return.

Matthew lets Abner and Samuel out on the New York side. He tells them he will return every night at midnight for three days, but if they do not return he will assume they have been caught or killed. He tells Abner he will take care of Annie if this happens.
