Why does hiding and resting during the winter month when food is scarce help the polar bear?

Just like most other mammals, polar bears hibernate. Believe it or not, it actually gets a LOT more cold in the Arctic during the winter. This hibernation keeps it from freezing itself. As it eats, grows even more fat, and sleeps for a long period of time, the polar bear is kept warmer and safer from freezing almostmore than any other animal in the world!
