Edna Millay wrote the short poem "First Fig", which was part of the "A Few Figs from Thistles" collection, published in 1920 as "The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver: A Few Figs from Thistles: Eight Sonnets in American Poetry". In "Second Fig", which reads, "Safe upon the solid rock the ugly houses stand: Come and see my shining palace built upon the sand!" I believe that she was trying to make a statement about the difference between a more romantic time, and the false world she was encountering. It is my opinion that these and other works from the "Figs" collection told us of her contempt for being pushed into an inauthentic life. Incidentally, with this collection Millay won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923.
