What do genres mean in art?

Per definition genre means type or class of subjects. In painting some important genres are History, Religion, Mythology, Portrait, Landscape, Still-Life. On the other hand there is the term genre painting, which is about everyday life, usually not in upper-class society, sometimes comical.
