Is a lower axle ratio better?

In a sense yes and in a sense no. A Lower axle ratio will provide better MPG, but will not do as good on the towing, High will give more towing power but less MPG. I recommend the 2nd lowest axle ratio available (if 1 or 2 only then go with the lowest)!
