First, find a platform (brand) that has readily available parts. (i.e. Japanese bikes, Honda, Yamaha, suzuki are readily available and easy to work on) Second, do the work yourself or at least contract out the parts your not comfortable/familiar with. Take your time. Don't be forced (by self or others) to finish in a given time as you make stupid purchases...
