What does the check engine light and vsc light at the same time mean on a 2005 Scion xb?

It can mean lots of things. Check your gas cap and make sure it isn't loose. If it is, then tighten it and drive normally for a day or two and it should turn off. If your gas cap is tight you have two options.

My recommendation is to take it to Autozone first and have them do a code scan for free. Write down the codes that are causing the lights and look them up. There are some well known codes ("evap" code means gas cap is loose/leaking) and go from there.

If the problem seems to be serious then it is time to take it to a mechanic and get a engine diagnostic for $90 (dealer price). There are some known problems with the VVT system that requires removing the camshaft ($$$).

I really hope it is a loose gas cap.
