Meaning of star tattoo

The nautical star goes back to old navy traditions. It was the sailor that brought the tattoo back with him to the states. The nautical star represents 5000 nautical miles sailed. There are many other old navy tattoos such as the sailor's knot, the full rigged sailing ship, a blue swallow, the compass, helms and anchors, mermaids, how about the golden dragon, a sea turtle for the shell back, or a blue nosed polar bear. All having a significant meaning. And the list goes on, this is only a few to list for the navy. How about the winged skull with a beret for the Army's elite paratroopers and Special forces?
