What was the indeched servant?

An indentured servant was an individual who agreed to work for a specific number of years in exchange for passage to a new land, typically during the 17th and 18th centuries in North America. After fulfilling their contract, which usually lasted between four to seven years, they would gain their freedom and, in some cases, receive land or tools to help them start anew. This system was a common way for labor to be supplied in colonies, especially before the widespread use of enslaved labor. Indentured servitude was a means for many impoverished individuals to seek better opportunities, although the conditions of servitude were often harsh.
