It depends on how extensive the remodel is. If you're replacing cabinets and countertops but not making any actual structural changes (knocking holes in walls, removing supporting beams, etc.) then you certainly don't need one. If there are any structural changes then having an architect may make it easier for you to obtain the necessary building permits.
