Why is it important to take an xray only within 10 days of the last menstrual period for women of childbearing age?

An xray can be taken at any point in the menstrual cycle, not just within 10 days of the last menstrual period. In some cases this practice may be used because of potential risk of an xray being taken when a woman is pregnant, thus it would pose a risk to the unborn child.
