Why is blood red not green?

Blood cells contain the chemical haemaglobin which is iron based and reddy-brown. When it combines with oxygen it makes oxyhaemaglobin that has a bright red colour and this is why we see blood as red.

Some insects do not use haemaglobin but use other chemicals which is why their blood is sometimes white or green.
