What is the deal at the end of Chapter 1 of to kill a mockingbird?

At the end of Chapter 1 of "To Kill a Mockingbird," we learn that Jem and Scout's neighbor, Boo Radley, has been rumored to have stabbed his father with a pair of scissors when he was a teenager.
