How did billy train the dogs to hunt coons?

Billy pretty much just used a coon hide as a practice tool and dragged it throughout a forest to help them learn the scent of a coon, and how tricky hunting can be. He also waded in the river with the coon hide so the dogs could get used to having to capture a coon even in the water.
