Who is the great Pumpkin?

The Great Pumpkin is a legendary entity (probably non-existent) that Linus believes will bring treats to "the most sincere pumpkin patch" on Halloween.

He has never appeared in the comic strip, or in the 1966 Peanuts movie special that regularly airs on TV, entitled "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown."
