Juan Sebastián Elcano was a Spanish explorer best known for his role in the first circumnavigation of the Earth. He initially traveled with Ferdinand Magellan, setting sail from Spain in 1519 and exploring parts of South America, the Pacific Ocean, and the Philippines. After Magellan's death in 1521, Elcano took command of the expedition and completed the journey back to Spain in 1522, returning via the Indian ocean and around Africa.
