Yes, the Chumash took salmon. Writing about the Chumash, Moratto (1984) states that they "hunted deer, caught salmon, and gathered acorns, sage seeds and other vegetable products." The Santa Ynez River was once home to the largest steelhead run in California south of San Francisco and no doubt the Chumash harvested searun rainbow trout too.
