Paint is best purchased with look, and durability in mind. The higher the gloss content the more durable/washable the paint is, but the less aesthetically pleasing it is… Higher gloss means more reflected light and more visibility of "flaws" in the wall or finish.
In a living room, in an adult household, an eggshell finish is wonderful. You can wipe off fingerprints and smudges around light switches etc. and still have a lower reflecting finish that gives a more aesthetically pleasing over all look.
In a household with small children where the living room is also the family room, it might be advisable to move up the gloss scale to pearl or even satin finish. The washablity in this case makes up for the increase in reflection .
