How did the Philippines become an American possession?

On December 10, 1898 , Spain and the United States signed the Treaty of Paris in France ending the Spanish-American War.

This treaty provided that:

1. Spain gave to the US it's territories in the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico;

2.The US paid Spain the sum of $20 million;

3.Cuba was given independence.
