What does a gate in an electrical circuit do?

Generally, in electrical circuits it is desired to turn on/off an electrical device depending upon the value of input signals.To implement this action different type of logic gates are used.So, depending upon the given combination of inputs, the gate either turns on/off the electrical devices.
