In To Kill a Mockingbird what is Jem trying to get Atticus to understand?

Jem is trying to get atticus to understand that Boo Radey had never hurt them. He had multiple times where he could have hurt them but instead mended the pants, warmed Scout with a blanket and given them gifts.
