How many engines can a plane have?

the max they have now is 4 but the could have 5...2 on each wing and 1 on the tail.

Actually, Antonov is flying some planes with 6 engines, and some military aircraft in the past have had 10. It is true that very few airliners will have anything beyond 4 currently.
