The eight people in the Annex were captured by Karl Silberbauer, a Gestapo officer, with the assistance of some plainclothes NSB men. Simon Wiesenthal later wanted to prosecute Silberbauer, but Otto Frank refused this, saying Silberbauer had not been their betrayer, merely an officer assigned to do a job, which he had done without cruelty or malice. Silberbauer's commanding officer, Julius Dettmann had taken the phone call from the betrayer, but Dettmann committed suicide at the end of the war, and could not be questioned.
