Horsepower was developed as a concept by the Scottish engineer James Watt in the late 18th century. He created the term to compare the output of steam engines to the work done by horses, making it easier for people to understand the power of his engines. Watt's calculations estimated that one horsepower could lift 550 pounds one foot in one second. This measurement became a standard unit of power in engineering and continues to be used today.
