These animals that breed north of the Antarctic continent on sub-Antarctic islands make their homes in open water.
Open water is generally warmer than ambient air in these climates. As well, these animals are covered with fur and a layer of blubber, which retains core temperatures. They can sun themselves to warm their bodies, or return to open water when it is warmer than the beach air.
