What is the history of plastic surgery?

After playing hockey, a group of us were discussing the various cuts and bruises that hockey players seem to get on a regular basis. the question was asked to one of the medical types there: "why is plastic surgery called what it is and what is the history. of course, after a couple of beers, there were many creative suggestions, but no one, not even an ortho specialist, a male nurse or an insurance salesman could come up with an answer. any suggestions?
