Black rhinos once flourished across a wide range in Africa, with populations estimated in the hundreds of thousands prior to the 20th century. However, due to poaching and habitat loss, their numbers dramatically declined, with only about 2,400 individuals remaining by the early 2000s. Conservation efforts have since helped stabilize and incrementally increase their population, but they remain critically endangered.
