Our 1994 Mazda 626 5-spd 2L is now 18 yrs old and has delivered 317,000 miles. I continue to drive it every day. Some features:

Performance probably has to do with driving, freq oil changes every 3-4K, and manufacturing. Some have suggested it may have been one of the earlier models on the assembly line when tolerances were tighter.
