Why is there a b in doubt?

The Word descends from Latin (dubare Old Latin dubitare, to be uncertain), with the addition of a syllable becomes "to be uncertain of". The spelling was retained but the hard trailing "T" overpowered the 'B" sound in Middle English (douten).
