What is the proper spark plug gap for a 1995 Mercury Cougar XR7 with a 4.6 V8?

According the the Chilton's manual I have for Courgars and T-Birds, its .054. Several references on the net seem to confirm this. Very wide if you ask me, I can't find a gapping tool that goes out that wide. I've had to use a combination of smaller feeler gauge blades and have been able to get .053 inches.
