The term "Black Panther" may be applied to black-colored leopards or to black jaguars in the Americas. The young are born live and cared for by their mother.

Like most big cats, panther litters are small : just 2 to 4 kittens, called cubs. The leopard cubs are born after a gestation period of 90 to 105 days.

Black jaguars have dark brown skin that does not contrast much with their black spots. Jaguar cubs have about the same gestation period before birth: 93 to 105 days. A female jaguar will not allow a male jaguar anywhere near her cubs.
