What role did military play in Sparta?

Sparta's military was famously brutal and single-minded, both in their own time and to our modern sensibilities. Spartan families would leave infant males in the wild for days at a time, and their survival meant military service. They kept sparse accommodations (living a "Spartan" lifestyle) and freely promoted a sexualized mentorship program in order to foster greater devotion to their comrades.
