How to use benefit of doubt in sentence?

The referee gave benifit of the doubt.

I think that if you believe someone even though they have a reason to lie, you are giving them the benefit of the doubt. so if the referee doesn't see something, and believes what one coach is saying happended, he is giving that coach the benefit of the doubt.
