I traced a loud, varying pitch, squealing and chirping noise (at idle) to the water pump after replacing all the belts on a 1994 22RE. I originally suspected the Power Steering pump or tensioner pulley. After taking off the power steering belt, running the engine, and getting the same sound, I turned the water pump pulley by hand and, sure enough, that's what was squeaking and chirping.) After buying the pump from Carquest (good quality parts), I called a Toyota dealer's parts department and asked them about the torque spec. (since there are so many variations listed on the internet and in the cheap repair manuals). They said to TORQUE THE 10mm HEAD NUTS AND BOLTS TO 13ft-lb, AND THE LONG 12mm HEAD BOLT TO 14ft-lb. I followed this advice, and the pump seated very nicely, squeezing the thin bead of non-hardening sealant out the sides a touch, just like the original. No coolant leaks. I used Wurth DP-300 gasket sealant on both sides of the gasket.
