What should one look for when test driving a used BMW?

As with any car, one needs to listen closely for any unusual noises. A knocking or whining sound is especially bad as it can signal engine trouble. Any sort of jerking when accelerating should be noted, as should a slow response in braking. Tire tread should be examined as well.
