Where did chainmail come from?

Chainmail, also known as chainmaille or simply mail, originated in Europe around the 3rd century BC, though similar forms appeared in other cultures, such as the Celts and Romans. It was made of interlinked metal rings, offering soldiers protection while allowing for flexibility and mobility. The technique spread throughout Europe and the Middle East, evolving over time into various styles and forms used by armies until the late Middle Ages. Its practicality made it a staple in medieval warfare before being gradually replaced by plate armor.
