Sampaguita is Philippine's national flower because of its white color which symbolizes purity, strength, its fragrance, its popularity and its importance in the legends of the Filipino people. It's a species of jasmine which is found in Philippines, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Malay.
The sampaguita flower bloom full-year and have small, white, dainty, star-shaped blossoms, which open at night and wilt in less than a day. Though small, they are known for their subtle, perfume scent. Sampaguita grows from 10 to 15 feet tall. Jasmine leaves are shiny, and the flowers, which grow in clusters and have five or six 1-inch white or yellow petals.
Oil extracted from sampaguita flower is used in cosmetics industry such as perfumes, deodorant, hair oil and body care lotions. Sampaguita flowers are also used as an alternative medicine. Many people used it for alleviation of ailments such as fever, cough, diarrhea and others. Sampaguita are used as a fragrant due to its attractive, strong and unique scent. The flowers are picked and put in water to drink.
