What is squelch?

Squelch is something used in telecommunications, squelch is a circuit function that acts to suppress the audio (or video) output of a receiver in the absence of a sufficiently strong desired input signal. For instance if you turn the squelch up on a radio you can cut out the noise but if someone transmits they will pass the squelch threshold and be heard.
