Most of the research for creating the Brangus breed was done by the USDA at the USDA Experimental Station in Jeanerette, Louisiana, USA, starting around the early 1930's. During the same period, Clear Creek Ranch of Welch, Oklahoma and Grenada, Mississippi, Raymond Pope of Vinita, Oklahoma, the Essar Ranch of San Antonio, Texas, and a few individual breeders in other parts of the United States and Canada were also carrying on private experimental breeding programs. All the producers and the USDA was working to find a desirable beef-type animal that both had the Brahman's natural ability to thrive in adverse conditions and retain the qualities which the Angus breed was known for.

In Vinita, Oklahoma, breeders from 16 states and Canada came together to form the American Brangus Association in July 2, 1949, later named the International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA).
